How the numbers work
All six orientations of the item are tried and the best one wins — that is what a person with a box and a tape measure would find. Packed weight = units x item weight + empty carton. Volumetric weight and chargeable weight use the same divisors and minimums as the import cost estimator, so one carton never gets two answers.
Straight-sided items only: irregular shapes, dividers and void fill all reduce the real number of units per carton.
