How the check works

GTIN-8, UPC-12, EAN-13 and GTIN-14 all end in a check digit: multiplying the digits alternately by 3 and 1 from the right and adding them up must land on a multiple of ten. The prefix table is the GS1 one, read from gs1.org on 2026-09-28. GS1 states on that same page that a prefix does not tell you where a product was made, only which member organisation issued the number.

A sanity check before you buy or upload a number, not a GTIN licence: only the GS1 member organisation that issued a prefix can confirm who owns it.
